TECHNICAL BULLETIN
STATIC PREVENTION AND REMOVAL RECOMMENDATION

A. STATIC PREVENTION

Run equipment at the lowest possible film tensions (unwind and rewind)
Use roll coverings that have antistat materials incorporated into the covering.
Control room humidity.

B. REMOVAL EQUIPMENT

TINSEL:
Tinsel is the most common and cheapest, but is limited in it's capability.

PASSIVE BARS:
These act the same as tensil with the same limitations.
POWERED BARS:
There are several different bar designs available, but the most common ones are those that are a series of points connected to a high voltage 60 cycle power supply. The power supplied to the points ionizes the air adjacent to the points, both positively and negatively. As the film with the static charge passes by the bar, the ions with a charge opposite the charge on the film will be attracted to the film and neutralize the static charge.
BLOWERS:
These units are quite effective up to a foot away from the film at speeds up to 700 fpm. At speeds of 300 to 400 fpm, they will be effective up to 16 inches away from the film surface

C. STATIC BAR PLACEMENT

The most effective placement of a static bar, no matter what design, is within one roll diameter of the point that the film loses contact with a roll. For true neutralization, the bar must be placed on the same side of the film as the roll that the film is in contact with. (See attached sketch) The reason for this is the static charge is actually only on the side of the film that is in contact with the roll.

D. STATIC MEASURMENT

Static is normally measured with a field meter. The meter we use is a Model 255 STAT-ARC METER, manufactured by Monroe Electronics.

E. TEST DEVICES

IONOMETER
This unit measures the ionization capability of the static bars and
blowers.
